Use Diet to Slow Or Reverse Hair Loss

As with most things, it's a good idea to help yourself first with a back to basics approach when it comes to finding a cure to your hair loss problem. Although miracle cures may be offered to you - probably for considerable money - out there in the marketplace, they rarely work, or at least not in the five minutes that seems to be implied in the advertising.

The best back to basics approach when it comes to reversing hair loss is to pay close attention to your diet. Common sense really - everything about your body is dependent on what you put into it.

So what are some basic things you can improve about your nutrition in an attempt to reverse or slow down hair loss?

Your hair needs to be properly fed just like any part of your body - and junk food just isn't going to cut it.

A diet that is lacking in calories and protein can certainly encourage hair loss and generally unhealthy looking hair.

Amino acids are essential for healthy hair and you don't really need to do anything special to get these - a decent well-balanced diet will do the trick just fine in this area. Essential fatty acids are another major contributor to hair health. Your body can't manufacture these on its own so you can only obtain them through your diet. These fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6 can be obtained from fish such as salmon, sardines and tuna, and plants like flaxseed, soybeans and pumpkin seeds. They are also present in walnut oil and fish oil capsules. They are also available via various commonly available nutritional supplements.

There is some evidence to support the fact that a diet too rich in saturated animal fats can increase hair loss, so this is something to watch for - indeed, this type of diet is going to cause quite a few health problems in the long term - hair loss might be the least of your worries if you don't moderate the saturated animal fats.

Getting your daily vitamins is also crucial to maintaining a healthy head of hair. Your body can't manufacture its own vitamins so you must get these from your diet or from dietary supplements. But be careful, don't overdo it - excesses of some vitamins has been linked to hair loss - just make sure you stick to the recommended daily doses.

As with most health problems, a starting point for treatment should always be to maintain good general health. Proper diet and adequate exercise are always the best starting point for sorting out any physical problems you may have such as hair loss.

While there are vitamins you can take for healthy hair and to help prevent hair loss, the downside of this is that taking excessive amounts of vitamins can actually lead to hair loss. Some of the most important vitamins for hair loss are the B vitamins because they contain:

· Zinc
· Inositol

Through laboratory experiments with theses vitamins for hair loss, scientists have seen a decrease in thinning hair in lab animals. These results show that a diet low in magnesium cause hair loss in patches, while one low in biotin or Inositol results in total baldness.

If you look at taking vitamins for hair loss, you will notice that these are vitamins essential for good health as long as you take them in moderation. Vitamin A is one of the vitamins to increase hair growth, but if you abuse it, it can also result in hair loss. Doctors will tell you that proper nutrition is as important for healthy hair as regular washing. You can also get shampoos and conditioners that contain vitamins for your hair, but you should not rely on these alone. Many experts recommend using a hot oil treatment once or twice a month to keep you hair healthy. These are much more affordable alternatives than taking vitamins for hair loss every day. You also know that there is danger in taking too many vitamins to increase hair growth and having the reverse occur.
